ABSTRACT:
This paper will introduce the concept of Adaptable System Recovery (ASR) for Linux systems. ASR makes it possible to easily adapt a system backup to fit new hardware by enabling a simple means for reconfiguring drivers, resizing and relocating filesystems, and restoring storage configuration.

ASR is a kind of improved Bare-metal Recovery (BMR) that makes a Linux or AIX System Administrator's life easier in the following ways:

  • Easily restore a system backup onto newer hardware than what the backup was made from
  • Quickly restore a backup onto a virtual system
  • Effortlessly clone/provision multiple systems, even if the hardware is not the same
  • Smoothly change software configuration of a system for improved performance
  • Efficiently perform hardware migration or upgrades
