ABSTRACT:
This paper discusses a solution for implementing a Virtual SAN, running as VMs on a pair of virtual servers and providing highly available fail-safe storage for Business Continuity. It covers VMware ESX, VMotion and DataCore storage virtualization. For many shops, the cost of implementing a shared storage SAN is the barrier to realizing a Server Virtualization project. The authors highlight step by step how to test auto-failover and recovery, provision shared storage to virtual servers, and how to set up VirtualCenter with two VMotion-enabled VMware ESX servers and DataCore SANmelody storage virtualization software. The resulting dual server virtual infrastructure provides a new and optimal level of cost saving consolidation by integrating virtual servers together with a fully featured fail-safe SAN from DataCore supporting auto failover and recovery for data protection and business continuity.
